Three Australian men have paid to avoid jail time for raping a 17-year-old girl.

Dylan Djohan, 23, Ashwin Kumar, 23, and Waleed Latif, 21, pleaded guilty to raping a teenage backpacker while they were on holiday in Croatia.

The men, from Melbourne raped the teenage girl while in a bar in Split, Croatia, in July.

To avoid facing a jail sentence, the men made an agreement with Croatian prosecutors to pay $31,594 (over £21,000) after waiting six months for trial.

The men were initially sentenced to a one-year jail term, though that was reduced to a five-year good behaviour bond.

Police in Croatia seized the three men’s passports in order for the defendants to appear in court this month.

But lawyers for the men and the prosecution agreed a deal which allows them to fly home with a conditional sentence.

I'm sick of plea bargaining, charge them or don't, no haggling, no bribery.
Just get on with it.

Who gets the money, the victim or the lawyers? Justice really is a joke.

I'm not sure. Some countries see it as recompense if the victim agrees, whether Croatia is one of them?

Wasn't there something like this in the Pistorius case?
