Hogweed

Noticed that all of a sudden we are getting a lot of
reports of people being stung by the weed called
Hogweed here in the UK.
It grows to over 5foot tall and has white flowers and
big green leaves.
Children have brushed past it and also touched it
as all of a sudden the weather has made it explode
its population. When stung by it they don't feel any
pain but once it gets into the skin the skin burns as
though they are being stung by lots of bees.
Once the red rash comes up that part of the skin
cannot stand the Sun shining on it and can hurt
months or years afterwards. Sounds like a Triffid
to me.
When I was a kid we used to call it Mothers Die and
no one dare touch it as we all loved our Mothers and
didn't want them to die so cant remember anyone
getting stung by it.
Sounds a nasty little or should I say big thing and
they are now taking steps to irradicate it due to its
danger especially to children.

Re: Hogweed

Hi Sandra, I've seen quite a few reports of this weed in recent days but, to the best of my knowledge, I've never seen it.

Re: Hogweed

Can't say I've seen it either, but will take care when out and about near water, in future.

Re: Hogweed

Jazzi .... it's not only near water .... it's on roadside verges in country areas and the area where the path I have to walk through near where I live to go to town is full of it ... luckily it is a wide tarmac path so no need to come into contact with it.

The offending Hogweed ...

Keep a close watch when out walking your dogs too, it's so easy for them to get burned by sniffing the plant.

Re: Hogweed

We have it everywhere here, you can't walk down any lane or footpath without seeing it. You have to be careful as it grows down both sides of the footpaths, watch out that your dog doesn't run through it. The garden next to mine is very overgrown and I noticed some right in the middle, I hope the seeds don't blow into mine. It does look nice in the winter with dew or frosty cobwebs on it though.

Re: Hogweed

What I can't understand is why we've (or is it just me ?) never been aware of how dangerous it is before now ?
