He did this for years, he was a well known local eccentric and feature

Practice is a noun: the doctor's practice, the dentist's practice.

When you do something over and over in order to get better it's a verb, a doing word, you practise.

Yes, but you tread on very thin ice especially when 'banging on' you make such a fundamental error in your assertion. It was an error of grammar NOT spelling.
