I came from a family who never said those words , and I lived miles away from them and only contact was by phone . A couple of weeks before mum died of cancer I told her on the phone I loved her , first time ever , it was emotional as I knew I wouldn't speak with her again .I've always told my kids and grandchildren I love them and even more now .
I think the other generations found it hard to say .
It's only in much later life I've realised my parents loved me , they showed it differently that's all.

Gosh Meg, my son would never dream of doing that.
I'm lucky if I get a written kiss on my Christmas card!
I'm affectionate by nature, always have been, guess that's why I appreciate the more consistent 'love' shown by my animals over many years. It has never once faded, but inevitably taken away at some point.

My husband tells me at least once a day that he loves me, I find it harder to say. Again like others not because I was not shown love as a child I was but it was never said.When we have disagreements and I am cross with him he says if I didn't love him I would not care so much, which is true.
The funny thing is I used to tell my two girls (cats) all the time that I loved them.
