Re: Santa Claus is no longer
St Nicholas was a bishop known for his generosity to the poor. His Saints day is on 6th December so nothing to do with Christmas, but the feast day is associated with children receiving presents. So "Santa" was real, but he did not come down a chimney or have reindeer (he lived in what is modern day Turkey!).
Father Christmas was a bacchanalian political invention of the government after the civil war. They wanted to get rid of the Catholic frills of saints days. It was somehow merged with the American Santa during the less puritanical victorian times. Apparently it was a Lutheran idea that moved St Nicholas day to Christmas and inadvertently created the consumer-fest we see today. (something that would make Luther turn in his grave). The Government also moved Father Christmas to Christmas day. Anyway it all got mixed up and we have a mishmash of religious and political history on Christmas day.
So there was no "santa as we know him and there was no Father Christmas (politically akin to the recent "Winterfest"), but there was a St Nicholas.
