Re: How to get a council house

I mix with these people every day.

That is the ones that work here.

Most I like some I do not.

The ones I mix with work.

They have to live somewhere.

Maybe they could live......

Re: How to get a council house

This programme seems to pick out the worst ,I cant help wondering if its deliberate,There are many genuine cases.A young man near me has been told by the Council that he has to leave the council house where he lived with his Mother , now she has died ,as the house was modified for a disabled person and needed for another disabled person,He has to find his own acommodation but he has a dog and not many landlords allow dogs, and there are no council properties avaiable

Re: How to get a council house

As a single man he hasn't got a prayer dog or no dog .
Council housing seems to be allocated on a needs basis and children will always trump a single person .
He will have to get a room like many others perhaps in a shared house with people who don't mind dogs .

Re: How to get a council house

It's that dreadful programme again .
This time it's focusing on bad private landlords who presumably are being subsidized by the council
First case middle age couple who came from Goa 11 years ago.
Why ?
Can anyone just come in from Goa ?
Second case
The man ( actually British) who lives in a bedsit .( paid for by the council)
The council pays cash bonus to landlords as incentives to take tenants .
But despite being paid a bonus of 2k+ the landlord wants the British man out .
( hardy surprising since he ,the tenant, has wrecked the property)
The third is a Polish guy + family
Who is paying an exhorbinant amount for a illegally converted garage .
They estimate there are 500 people living in converted sheds and garages .
In Houndslow alone
Next are a Phillipino family .
It's all very sad
But I have to ask ...
How do all these people get to live in the Uk in the first place?
Needless to say they all want council houses .

Ok the couple from Goa has got a two bed flat
( the council paid a bonus of £4000 to the landlord in order to get it )
No wonder the councils have no money !

This man has just paid £12,000 for his daughters wedding
How could any daughter take that kind of money from parents who were living in those conditions.
It is all madness.

Re: How to get a council house

Just watching this on plus 1. It angers me too that people from abroad think they are entitled to social housing and walk out of council offices in a huff, because they never got the answer they expected!

And why bring all your family just to live in squalid over crowded conditions? We don't owe you anything!!!

Just how many British born families are pushed further down?

ETA. I watch Council Crackdown every morning and that is an eye opener! Many people just walk away from their Council homes without informing the authorities and it is only during an audit that empty ones are discovered. How many of us realised that Councils do not have keys to any of their properties and that each abandoned one has to have locks changed by a locksmith? At further expense?

And there are the ones who go on to sublet, raking in thousands. There is such widespread abuse of council accommodation, and unknown empty homes, just waiting for deserving tenants.

Meg this so surprised me that I had a quick rethink of my values .

£12000 on a wedding ????

And he and his wife in an expensive slummy place ( paid for party by housing benefit )

Of course he says 'it is a one off occasion ( ?) if I had had £15000 I would have spent that '

I was brought up to be careful my parents were frugal .
Never a borrower nor a lender be and all that .
Was this wrong ?
My Dad never owed a penny in his life .

This programme amazes me
Is it deliberately made to cause anger and social resentment ?

Even the council officiers themselves are all from other countries from their obvious unenglish accents .

Who runs Houndslow council one wonders?

Likewise Muddy, I didn't have 'a wedding' I got married in a registry office and it didn't cost my parents a penny.
No way would I have demanded an expensive wedding if they were living in a slum

There is something a bit odd about the whole programme Muddy or do I just come from a different world with different values one of 'what you can't pay for you don't have'.
