Re: Is an Older person's point of view less Valid than that of a Younger Person.

Young people have always thought older people's opinions are worth less than theirs. Remember the lines from Alice in Wonderland -

"You are old, Father William," the young man said,
"And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head—
Do you think, at your age, it is right?"

"In my youth," Father William replied to his son,
"I feared it might injure the brain;
But now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,
Why, I do it again and again."

"You are old," said the youth, "As I mentioned before,
And have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door—
Pray, what is the reason of that?"

"In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
"I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment—one shilling the box—
Allow me to sell you a couple?"

"You are old," said the youth, "And your jaws are too weak
For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak—
Pray, how did you manage to do it?"

"In my youth," said his father, "I took to the law,
And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life."

"You are old," said the youth, "one would hardly suppose
That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose—
What made you so awfully clever?"

"I have answered three questions, and that is enough,"
Said his father; "don't give yourself airs!
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
Be off, or I'll kick you down stairs!"

I often wonder why some posts lean towards the obvious or banal (excluding. this one)

They receive the wishy washy answers they deserve.

BUt I commend them for contributing

A point of view can be arrived at though life experience , so the longer you live possibly the point of view is more realistic. Now where is my comfort blanket.

It depends on the subject. For example, youngsters wouldn't have much knowledge about old age health problems, pensions, retirement, mortgages, and loads of other things they haven't yet experienced. Therefore wouldn't be able to be alot of help with their opinion.

On the other hand, we perhaps would not be alot of help with their music, fashion trends, places to go, school homework, technology, and probably alot of other things they deal with every day.

All age groups can have valid opinions if the subject is something they know about.

Never Alan!

I am right 98% of the time so who cares about the other 3%?

To those of you who misread my post, I 'posed the question' not 'made an assertion'. I think the consensus is that age makes no difference. I just wonder why some posters dismiss the views of others by referring to them as 'Old Gits' as I've seen in a recent post !

Depends on how ignorant, ill informed or downright stupid the person is, regardless of their age.

It is easy to become Sissyistic as one wonders what pearls will be available to take to the other side.
The youngsters are no better, most seem to suffer from "Sissyistic Fibreoptic".

Re: Is an Older person's point of view less Valid than that of a Younger Person.

The trouble with having points of view as an older person is that they may only serve to make a person more discontent with life. Have a point of view when young and there's the option of acting on it and perhaps making a difference. When older, there probably isn't the time left to do that. Other than the interest they provide, having points of view will make no difference to what will come to happen.

This may seem a bit lethargic but because of the above, I try not to have too many points of view. Wouldn't make any difference if I did and letting some bits of life float over the head without having a point of view can mean a more contented old age.
