Re: old versus new (laptop vs ipad)

Did it need printing out, if it's instantly accessible on the iPad itself? It takes just seconds to get into it and he can just dip in and out of it when he has a few minutes to spare. Might be worth a mention to him. Or get his daughter to show him the guide, to get started...

Re: old versus new (laptop vs ipad)

I just simply can't understand anyone who can't find a use for an iPad or android tablet. I don't think I could manage without mine now. I have a desktop but I use the iPad every single day....sitting in front of TV when I want to look up something of interest.....reading my emails without having to get up and go to the desktop.....showing people photos when I go out visiting or socialising with family or friends......reading in waiting rooms, airports etc......catching up with TV news etc. It's one if the best things I ever bought.

Obviously other people live differently which is fine too but don't dismiss them on the basis of one or two negative opinions.

I wouldn't be without my ipad either, it's so convenient to take out with you. I will definitely be taking it with me on my hols this year.

mags - I had to laugh at a post I read where someone had been bought an ipad by their family but had given it back as "it didn't do anything". Don't know what they were expecting it to do all by itself.

Re: old versus new (laptop vs ipad)

And another thing...

Every time I get a notification in Facebook or an Email my tablet goes "Bing Bong" and flashes either a blue or a green light at me (haven't worked why the difference) about a nano second later my phone goes "Doink Doink" for the same reason. Apart from my appalling selection of sounds for these devices it is driving me up the wall...

Re: old versus new (laptop vs ipad)

I can see how someone who used XP would be bemused by more up to date technology. Sorry but those 'in the know' (ie experienced 'puter users' have all derided that operating system since the day it came out, did not even know there were people still using it). Anyway, I have been using computers and their various operating systems since '96 (when state of the art meant less than 1Gig hard drive!!) and yes I had XP for about a month before I got rid. My son, a true geek, was constantly upgrading the system, and eventually moved the tower system into his room whilst buying me a lap top. So he took his old monitor (having bought himself a huge one) and set it up with a fancy shmansy keyboard on the table in the lounge. But last year I bought myself an Ipad, from his work place, Curry's, where they not only give you a tutorial, and allow you to return for help if you need it. I use mine in bed, as a reader, but mainly to play solitaire games.

Bruce - my ipad doesn't make any funny noises!

daisymay - do you like word games? I have a new one I am quite addicted to called Spelltower and another one called Wordpower and also Boggle and I play interactive Scrabble on it regularly.

Exactly... apart from being over priced (and not 16:9) the iPad also lacks many features

I tried a few word games, crosswords and such but once I start the solitaire games (there are several in the Card Sharp app) I find I go on for hours.

Never been much of a computer game player but my tablet comes with an excellent pinball game built in (Sony - think Playstation) and Crash Bandicoot (which I never play). I have downloaded a pretty good version of Sudaku but the pinball and sudaku keep me amused for about 5 minutes and 10 minutes respectively.
