The urgency (not) of Government action on homelessness

The Government's weak and pathetic mealy mouthed platitudes about seeking to help reduce homelessness have proved just that - weak and pathetic platitudes, since the committee tasked with attempting to resolve the issue has failed to hold even one meeting.

It's madness IMO asking the government to run the country and do Brexit at the same time. I'm no fan of the tories but that's too much for one political party to manage.

Well it is all wind and water.

There are thousands of empty properties owned by the Government and local Councils that could be used as temporary accommodation
It is disgraceful behavior and as usual th every poorest people have to suffer.

Who would leave a beggar in a ditch?
Callous people.

It makes for a good sound bite but what's the truth behind that statement Azure?

Should that beggar be given free accommodation, free utilities, free water?

If so what of the rest of society? Do we all also get everything free? If not why not?

The beggars you see are far from homeless generally and many are working in organised gangs earning £100-£200 every day.

Well over 30% of the street beggars you see are addicted to drink and/or drugs but personally I think it's far higher than that. Around 80% have some form of mental illness.

The continuing political sound bite of "homelessness" is a bum steer. A sleight of hand used for political point scoring by imbeciles like the Looney Labour party and by shameful and unscrupulous Neanderthal armchair pundits who don't care about facts and just want to peddle political mantra.

Money needs to be spent on treating mental health and drink/drug rehabilitation. Fix that and you'll fix "homelessness".

No-one needs to be homeless. There is emergency accommodation in every city. People choose to sleep rough and lie in ditches over having to pay money for rent and accommodation services.

True. I was amazed at numbers of properties my council own that are not being used for people who are stuck in temporary B and Bs or on the street even.

It's a complete scandal IMO

I also think some people might be willing to put those properties right for the council if they are damaged. Not everyone is so callous they won't offer a helping hand to others.

Re: The urgency (not) of Government action on homelessness

This Government has been brainwashing the general public into thinking that poor, disabled, homeless people are to be treated with contempt.
Instead of folk believing that having a job, a home and the means to live a decent lifestyle means they are lucky, they resent it.
People who don't have these things are percieved to be lucky that they don't have to get up in the morning and earn a living.
Why is going to work bad and not going a luxury?
I'm sure most homeless would love to work if they could, an address is something they need to get a job.
Having money does not make people more worthy.

Couldn't agree more, it was single parents a few years ago, then chavs, then poor, now disabled and pensioners. Anyone that may need a bit of help in this failing capitalist society.
