Re: Do you remember the Coronation 1953?

My parents hadn't left school or met by that point another 11 years before I came into the world. Have obviously seen bits of it and my gran was a great fan, she was in London watching from her brothers flat above the crowds so got quite a good view. My grandad remembered it as a day he couldn't get the fish and chip supper nan promised him if he let her go to London. He never let her forget that one.

Re: Do you remember the Coronation 1953?

Yes, it was black & white & mostly grey.

It rained, a lot.

Our downstairs neighbours invited us all to watch, because they'd got a TV for the occasion. (Afterwards they went back to not speaking to us again, as normal.)

We had iced gem biscuits, first time I'd seen them, they were red, white and blue, haven't seen them in those colours since.

At school I was given a book (which I still have) and a propelling pencil (which I haven't).

I remember the street party with the long tables and bunting.

It was so exciting as it was not long, after we had landed in England off the cattle boat from Ireland!
I sometimes joke that the party was to celebrate our family’s arrival into England!!

I got a mug and a silver spoon that l used, to eat my boiled googey eggs for many years.

13 years before I was born - I remember reading somewhere that the weather was unseasonably cool, like 10-12c or something.

Re: Do you remember the Coronation 1953?

I remember my parents taking me to Bristol Centre to see the huge floral Coronation Crown in the city gardens, it was beautiful.

We were all given a Coronation mug at school and felt very proud to own it.

Our road had a coronation party for the children, tables put together in the length of the road with everyone supplying sandwiches, fairy cakes, jelly, orange juice etc.

We didn't have television at that time so had to be content reading about it in the local paper.

Was that when Coronation chicken was invented? Before or after the Coronation?
