Seriously, though, I have long thought that cobbled streets are the answer.

They don't develop pot holes, they don't wear out and if the services need to dig them up, they can replace the cobbles exactly where they found them.

Another advantage - on local roads - is that they keep traffic speed down naturally. No need for humps and speed cameras.

And they look nice!
