Dead Ducks

After the driest winter on record a couple of the local swimming pools have been taken over by native wood ducks. The ducks obviously abusing the free entry to these pools (it has been a sore point that when the council started heating my local pool so it could be kept open all year they also started to charge for entry)

The health aspect has caused the council to attempt to relocate them but they keep coming back. The decision has been made to trap and euthanase them.

The native wood ducks “became territorial” and their defacating in the water had become a public health issue, the council said.

Up to 20 ducks from Helensburgh Pool are to be caught and killed, and another 15 at Corrimal Pool.

Re: Dead Ducks

When they have killed those 35 birds, what is to stop others coming?
How long will this killing continue - until there are no ducks left at all?

That water to them is a matter of life and death, hardly the same importance to humans who just want to play in the pool surely?

Is it really a killing offence to try and survive?
Why not try to help them instead?

Can't some sort of enclosure be made with a pond/lake in it, and contain the birds in there for the time being?

Re: Dead Ducks

I agree mags they could surely provide another pool for the birds, that's not beyond the Ken of man.

35 birds I almost hope many many more arrive if they are killed, absolutely teach them a lesson about looking after our natural animals and birds in times they are stressed by weather.

Re: Dead Ducks

Wouldn't have thought they would stay long in a swimming pool, can't be anything to eat surely?
Unless people are feeding them.

I agree, Purwell. Chlorinated water wouldn't be good for them to drink either, but I expect the poor things are desperate to survive.

I agree with this solution, Mups. It's barbaric to cull them.

Re: Dead Ducks

They're really beautiful birds. Where we used to live in Portland, Victoria there was a swamp right behind our house and some of the local bird watchers used to set up in our garden to watch the wood ducks. It's sad in this day and age that they can't come up with an alternative.
