Woman in jail in Iran

I can't help thinking there's more to this story than meets the eye.

Nazirim Ratcliff has been in jail in Iran for about 18 months and there's been a lot of discussion about what Boris Johnson has said but she's been held for such a long time that something about this story doesn't ring true.

Re: Woman in jail in Iran

Listening to people on radio who deal with cases like this apparently there are several a year just like this. Many countries lock up uk citizens or duel nationality ones on very flimsy evidence. They are not easy to get out either. Takes a while and a lot of diplomacy to free them.

I think she has dual nationality which has complicated matters. The UK government cannot protect dual citizens in the other country. She has worked in the media industry and has past links to a company that provides training for Iranian journalists. They see her as a spy and insurgent.

That's interesting Annie.
She might well have met with other journalists then, even if she wasn't training them.
Maybe she's got journalist friends over there.

Fact is, none of us knows!!

Re: Woman in jail in Iran

I had posted this on the Stupid Boris thread, but it's probably just as important here.

She had already been accused of more offences in October, which were likely to increase her sentencing to 16yrs, at that point. As Annie says, dual nationality is not recognised in Iran.
Found guilty of plotting to overthrow Iran's clerical establishment.

Re: Woman in jail in Iran

Can anybody tell me why this case is being given more attention than other people who are imprisoned in countries all over the world?

In my opinion she is just as daft as people who are ridiculed for going on holiday with no insurance and then their families appeal for help to get them home.

She knew she was going to a dangerous country but made the decision to go alone with her baby daughter.

Hi

Idiot Boris has screwed up big time about this.

We are now faced with paying over £300 million of Taxpayers money to sort this out.

He should be made to pay it himself.

Tpin has made a very astute post on this issue.

Well worth reading.

Oddly the family believe Boris has actually helped by making it more of a talking point. I don't think people should be going to these countries unless they can pay to get themselves back. We all know how dangerous they are.
