What's a scone?

Ha, I am kidding, but they are indeed few and far between in my little corner of the world.

By now the forum is sound asleep and dreaming of porridge and full English breakfasts that are likewise rare as radium around here.

Lest you starve, there are some regional breakfast favorites - gouda grits, beignets, and fried chicken and waffles, and biscuits and gravy - in the warming drawer.

Goodnight and good morning!

Re: Goodnight!

Not sure about 'Grits' Surfermom, it sounds like something Tom Sawyer would be having for lunch, I'll stick to my porridge for breakfast...........Unless I come to visit Florida, then it will be 'When in Rome'......

Had my first Christmas Dinner today, I like to get as many in as possible and judge them on a scale of ten....Today's managed a creditable 8/10....(bearing in mind that nothing gets a ten) so it's set a very high bar indeed......

Tonight after I sign off It will be a large Warburtons Crumpet for supper and then a good nights sleep. The weather forecast is very good for tomorrow mornings run so I might just go a bit further......Night Everyone.

I know!
Scones are called biscuits and the Americans eat them with gravy, which is a sweet white sauce thing.

Re: Goodnight!

Apparently I have cooked up more trouble than biscuits .

Scones are like biscuits here but biscuits tend to be more flaky and often layered, while scones are more crumbly. Biscuits are almost always round.

The gravy for biscuits is savory and starts with a butter (lots) and flour roux that is then thinned with milk, and seasoned with a salt and a heavy hand of black pepper with a sprinkling of red. Finely cooked crumbled sausage (for us vegetarians a spicy soy type) is added to the gravy and it is simmered to a fairly thick consistency. The sausage gravy is then poured over open biscuits. It is rich, delicious, and funds summer homes for cardiologists.

Grits are also a savory dish made up of coursely ground dried white corn. The dried grits are cooked with milk or buttermilk, and salt and pepper. Down here we fold in shredded gouda cheese. It is often served with steamed shrimp. Yes, for breakfast. Grits are a traditionally southern dish. Most Californians have never tried them.

As for me, I don't eat breakfast!

But I do like a midnight snack here and there, so off to the pantry I go ....

Goodnight!
