Prog Rock.

During the late 60`s and early 70`s some of the most creative music ive heard fell into this genre. Some of these bands are still around today. One of the best live acts ive seen was Magma.

Re: Prog Rock.

How about the wonderful Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band?

Alas Don Van Vliet died a couple of years ago but I agree though I last saw him with his 'tragic' band at the Albert Hall.

Yes devoted his final years to his painting.

First Prog rock band i saw was The Nice, at Newcastle City Hall, back in the 60`s.

Re: Prog Rock.

I saw the Nice when I was a student at QUB in the 60's. Keith Emerson was , as they now say, Awesome!

However, my favourite band was "Yes".

Re: Prog Rock.

I too saw The Nice (from memory at the Royal Festival Hall) I have a couple of their albums but I must admit after a while thought they were a bunch of pretentious wankers. Unfortunately I also saw Yes at Crystal Palace and thought the same. However I must admit I felt the same about Pink Floyd after Dark Side of the Moon a feeling about mid 70s music in general only relieved by the arrival of the Sex Pistols.

Re: Prog Rock.

Seen most of the bigger prog rock bands, but never Floyd, this band remain favourites, as do a lot of the splinter projects that followed

Re: Prog Rock.

I wasn't really a lover of "prog rock" - too many self-indulgent 20 minute solos and horrendously pretentious lyrics. For me they were a real turn-off - Yes, Nice, ELP etc.
I did love Floyd though - saw them first live at Brunel University where I was a student in 1969.
I wouldn't put Beefheart in the "prog rock" genre though - I'd put them in their own category - maybe with The Mothers Of Invention as company - and call it Art/Jazz/Rock.
Most of the prog rock bands were only doing what Procul Harum had done so much better in the mid to late 60's
