Re: Earthy smell in kitchen

Pesta, have you tried using any sink and plughole unblocker? The liquid stuff you put down the plughole.

I sometimes get a whiff of dampness when I empty my sink because I have a sink and a half sink and the waste pipes are connected. So when I let water out of the big sink some of it runs into the trap for the half sink and vice versa. Then you get crap trapped in the bends.

I use a bit of that sink unblocker and it clears it.

Have you tried a plunger? That might shift a partial blockage that's causing the water to get trapped and stagnate.

I've recently discovered a damp smell caused by my tumble drier. It's a condensing one and I hadn't cleaned the filters out for ages and ages which caused the water vapour to get trapped at the back and underneath the tumble drier. I cleaned the filters and mopped up the water and now it's fine.

Re: Earthy smell in kitchen

Pesta, I wondered if one of those handheld damp detectors would help to source the problem?

I had that damp smell in my bedroom/en-suite extension for ages. I was still with Chris at the time and kept on about the damp smell. He checked and said there was no sign of a leak. So l believed, he knew best!

After, we parted and l could still smell the smell. l decided to investigate! I took the side panel off the bath and found the concrete floor was absolutely soaked and so was the floor under the carpet in a cupboard next to it.

I could see a tiny drip coming from some plastic piping coming from the bath tap. Luckily one of my son’s friends is a plumber and he came out to look at it.
The leak was due to the man who fitted the bathroom not inserting the valves in the plastic piping. The leak had been going on for about two years!

I had to use a dehumidifier for days, to extract the water from the concrete.

I hope you get yours sorted soon.

Pesta,

It is likely that the smell is from a leaking waste pipe but it could also be outside water (rain) backing up under the house. For some reason damp seems to small in warmer weather rather than cold.

I think it would be a good idea to get someone in to look though as it could be a simple pipe fix.

Hi Nicol... thanks for your suggestions. Yes I've a sink and a half but I don't think any crap is likely to be trapped - just 'cos I have those things that catch anything so that it doesn't go down the plug hole (can't think what you call them ). I do throw bleach down the sink regularly too.
Sometimes my washer sends up a bit of a dampish smell even though I wipe it dry after washes. So I use bicarb and white vinegar every now and again.

Hi Art, Thanks and glad you got yours sorted, eventually!

Yes, I thought about those damp meters. The surveyor did all that tho' when I moved here. Mind, he was useless.
Short form story: I asked him to check out a smell, he said there wasn't one. To cut the story short again, the kitchen floor was saturated, from a dripping pipe to the washer. It was all discovered when I had the new kitchen put in.
As usual you pay for a surveyor to do nothing

Hi Dingalong - Yes, I've wondered about rain backing up many times. But, the weather has been bone dry for roughly 2/3 weeks. But, yes it does get a bit whiffy when the weather has been damp.
Don't know why I've had the whiffs in the dry weather, which is why I thought either the sink or the outside tap (which I don't think it is), were the problem.

Fender - will PM you - so don't rush off

......

Eee.... I don't know what the bloody 'ell it is! My 'eads mashed

I can't smell today, but when my sinuses were marginally letting me smell when I came home this afto - there didn't seem to be a smell.

After tea, I took everything out of the cupboard and smelt the cupboard. Fine, no smell. Everything is in order, no drips on any pipework or connections. No sign of leakages. Perhaps it isn't the sink. I dunno.

Being in a dip, with trees everywhere, it's cooler than 'up there' in the other roads. And, has more damp in the air. When folk have been in the winter months, their car's temp measuring the air outside have registered colder down here than 'up there'

We've had such wonderful dry sunny weather for quite a while, yet the earthy smell has been around. Obviously it's around when it rains, sometimes more than others.

It's weird and irritating! I've even thought maybe it's the pond.

I've often wondered who to get in to check the crawl space under the bungalow for anything.
But
a) I don't know who (what tradesman) and
b) it would probably cost an arm and leg.

Bah Humbug.

(Sorry it's all so long - thought it better to lump my replies to your good selves all together).

Definitely do not hire a damp specialist, that will cost you an arm and a leg. It's hard to say really because if it's pipe related you are better off with a plumber but damp related, better off with a builder.

Would any of your neighbours be able to recommend someone?

No, sadly. I tried asking my immediate neighbours for a CH chap when that broke down and a plumber and electrician when I first came here. All to no avail. The blokes, mostly retired, tend to do their own repairing, like men do. So, I wouldn't ask them. I'm not good asking for help anyway.

I've been here a while now and got to know folk and there was a builder just a few doors away, but he was always working then he built his daugher's house ... and now he's moved. I would have trusted him too.

To be fair, the chap who did the kitchen was a brilliant worker and could turn his hand to anything, but he lives miles away.

It's hard isn't it, trying to work out who's remit it comes under, but like you, I dismissed those damp 'specialists' after doing lots of research online.
