Re: Does anyone here,

I pay for a private dental plan I think it's about £15 a month that covers examination and two hygienist sessions but no treatments I pay for them separately. My dentist has recommended I now have another two hygienist visits each year at a cost of £62 per visit....it's all getting very expensive

Re: Does anyone here,

I see my hygienist every three or four months and it's about £50 a time.

I also have a policy with Westfield Health - costing £20 per month - from which I can claim about £150 pa on dental treatment; £120 every two years on opticians/glasses; up to £650 pa on therapists etc etc. There are daily benefits if you have to go into hospital; financial help to pay for carers; and private appointments with specialists.........etc etc. All well worth while. There are various other companies who offer much the same.

Re: Does anyone here,

I used to see a hygienist every 6 months, but all she did was scale & polish my teeth and advise if there were any bits I was missing whilst cleaning.

I decided to try and do this job myself, so after my final visit to a hygienist ( probably 8 years ago), I bought myself a good quality electric toothbrush & Tpees that I used every day.... I have never needed a hygienist since!

Tpees cost around £3 for 6, but you can reuse them, if you rinse them under the cold water tap, so a box of 6 can last up to a month.
Tooth brush heads need to be changed at least 5 times a year, but if you look on the internet you can usually get good deals on them.... and anyway, you need to regularly change your Toothbrush head, whether you see a hygienist or not.

Looking after your teeth is never cheap, but buying stuff to keep your dentures in place isn't either!

Re: Does anyone here,

I have been in the past, but like Twink, I don't go any more, I look after my teeth well at home, best toothbrush and best toothpaste, and clean my teeth at least 4 times a day.

Re: Does anyone here,

I go to the hygienist twice a year it costs at the last count £58 .
I go to the NHS dentist who is supposed to give a scale and polish but since I have been going to the hygienist he has copped out on this one.
Last time I went I was in his chair all of three minutes ( £21 .50 )
Oh well
I use interdental brushes and electric toothbrush and a water pick to clean my teeth .

Re: Does anyone here,

I have to see the hygienist as I have such a bad gag reflex, theres a few teeth I just cant clean properly so I have gum disease

In NI dental costs are different then England. In England if you need to see a hygienist as a necessity, its charged at NHS band 1

Here we have to pay regardless. I swap between a private and NHS practice ( depends on who has availability around my work schedule ) but both are charged at £30 for 30 mins

Re: Does anyone here,

I haven't been to the dentist for three years now because I just can't afford it. I am resigned to the fact that my teeth will probably just rot and I will become one of those old geezers with manky teeth.

Re: Does anyone here,

We go to the dentist every six months for the check up, while there the dentist polishes the teeth for us. I refuse to go to the hygienist as every time I did she tore my mouth to bits and I was sore for several days after. Last time an appointment reminder came through I phoned and told them I wouldn't be seeing her anymore..
