The Duvet

Otherwise known as a continental quilt!

Did you know that a duvet was never meant to cover a bed in a flat form, but that there should be one double per person? I didn't know this until my husband and I spent a weekend in a Pension (B&B) in the Moselle Valley, whilst living in another part of Germany. I hadn't seen a continental quilt before then either in the 70s, for that matter!

We went to our bedroom, and there were two continental quilts on the bed, each folded in half lengthways, and big square pillows for our heads. The idea was to lie on top of half of the duvet, then throw the other half over you - almost like a sleeping bag type of thing. Most effective!

Re: The Duvet

That could be a cure for the fights over the quilt on a double bed. When I was married, it's funny how the quilt always went over to my side of the bed

Re: The Duvet

thats sounds ideal and would save lots of arguments, we have now reached an agreement OH grabs what he can to keep covered, and i milk it

We have a king size bed with a super King size duvet, and a throw over on top.

I don't know why but i end up with most of the covers it just happens

Re: The Duvet

I thought it was a very sound idea and, when I tried it out in that Pension, I could see the sense of it. I'm not sure if the French use them in that way, but that's how the Germans use them.

Also, the Germans don't have double beds as we know them either. They use two 3ft single beds pushed together, with a thick blanket in the hollow in between, with two individual sheets underneath each, if that's the way people want to sleep, or they have two singles.
