Re: Capitalism or Socialism?

Hi

The problem with Communism is that nobody has managed to get it to work.

Socialism is not much better, it is very inefficient, look at Venezuela, you have to queue for toilet rolls and other essentials.

Capitalism does work, but unrestricted Capitalism is nasty, no better than the Robber Barons of the Middle Ages.

The situation has got worse, very low wages, zero hours contracts are just serfdom really, people condemned to a life of insecurity and worry.

Cooperatives, such as John Lewis, are a better way forward.

I would like to see all private companies having to have profit sharing, but equal profit sharing, everyone gets the same amount of money,
I would also like to see sick pay and holidays being standardised, with proper, enforceable rules.

I favour a system not based on money, when you look at it the amount of money claimed to be in the system globally much of it doesn't really exist. If everyone asked for their money in cash tomorrow it just isn't available. So we have a system based on nothing at all really.

John Lewis is showing the way forward as you rightly stated. Very good company to be an affiliate for too.

That's a great quote. I hadn't heard it before.

All very true. Sweden did have those things you suggest - cooperatives, profit sharing, companies having to pay profit over a certain limit to the gov't, all alcohol sales and taxes going to the gov't, standardised welfare and so on. When I was there, I thought one of their small but great ideas was that employers could take on an unemployed worker, and the "dole" went to the employer to pay the worker for a certain time. It seemed such a simple but good idea.

But again individual greed got in the way and the social democrats lost power to right wing conservatives.
