100 year-old man in Court

Taken from today's paper:

"A 100 year-old man has appeared in crown court accused of three sex attacks on a schoolgirl.
Douglas Hammersley, who uses a wheelchair and hearing aids, is charged with indecent assault on a girl under 14 in 1977 and 1978. The alleged victim is now in her 40's.
The case in Amersham, Bucks, was adjourned while experts rule if Hammersley is fit to stand trial.
Judge Francis Sheridan said: "He must co-operate."

I wonder if he will even be able to remember what happened?
I also wonder why the alleged victim left it so long to say anything?

What are your thoughts on this?

It does seem a bit odd Mups, does he have money I wonder? I also wonder if the law experts on here can shed light on his possible defence that he does not know anything or remember anything about that time in his life due to age? Guilty till proven innocent?

Seems the way of things in these cases Rehab - condemn a person and find them guilty and that person has to prove their innocence.

How can an accusation from over forty years ago be proved by the accuser that it took place and for the accused to prove that it didn't? It's about time that a time limit, say twenty-five years, be placed on accusations of this type.

I do agree, but far too sensible to be taken up..
There seems to be a witch hunt on these sort of cases lately, everyone and his dog is being accused. I suppose the blood sucking lawyers and solicitors are looking to fill the gap now that the military are no longer in the frame.

We've had this discussion so many times before.
Maybe the victim found the courage to come forward at at last when she read this?
