No, you’re not trapped. You just need to make sure you’ve fully explored all the consequences and implications of Leaving before you do it. Or offer the electorate the chance to have their say on it.
You also have to make sure that the electorate is properly supported in making that decision with accurate, honest and unbiased information so that they’re not misled by propaganda by either side.
Having come to a decision, you then need to prepare the ground for what is to come before you trigger a time limited exit period. And above all, you need a realistic, verging on the worst case view of how far (or not) the EU is likely to bend over backwards to keep you on side. And it’s preferable not to antagonise them by calling them names at every opportunity.
