Re: whats the significance of this song

I have the feeling I'm going to walk into it here Aitch, anyway I can't say I know the significance of it, it's just another mushy love song from the fifties, they were churning them out then by the cartload. Remember Dickie Valentine's junk?

Re: whats the significance of this song

It was the first Number 1. ever in the British hit parade ( singles chart) November of 1952 based on record sales and was called an xmas no1.
Frankie Laine followed the next year with 'Answer me ' which got banned by BBC for religious content.

It was Al Martino's first song and it was an instant hit?

Spot on Hammer, It was the first number one in the new British top 20, it ran for 9 weeks from the 11th of the 11th 1952, which was why I put it on. and Mags, I thought Al martino had records before that one but only in the USA

That's fair enough Aitch, some interesting answers already. That song brings back memories of my first cousin who used to baby sit us, I think I was about seven at the time and she was a teenager, she never stopped singing that song and 'The finger of suspicion', another one of hers was 'If I give my heart to you', she used to whack us when we got out of hand so painful memories are associated with all those tunes.

Re: whats the significance of this song

I think the Musical Express got taken over in early 52 and The New Musical Express (NME) was launched and they copied the US by having our own chart.

I remember it well because it was printed on thin old paper and the ink got on yer chips and was bloody hard to read.
I usually got a secondhand copy from the bookie I did a bit of running for, which kept us occupied.
