According to the RSPB site they do cover all ares in the South in winter time so you may well have seen one.

I thought I was going mad, slightly madder anyway.
I keep hearing a bird in the field nextdoor singing away, every now and then it makes the sound of a telephone ringing!
Well, it's not me, my visitors have heard it too! Even my wasband admits it's a bird, he usually takes every opportunity to ridicule me!
What can it be?
It sounds like a blackbird, I can't see it though and I thought only jackdaws mimicked.
I'm going to try to record it, not sure how I could post it though for you to hear

We do have a couple of magpies that visit.
The phone noise seems to be part of a song which sounds like a blackbird's. There's a long bit it sings first, then the "phone" bit, then a short bit. Usually the same tune.
I'm going to try to film or record it this afternoon.

I remember my mate and myself at patch confidently identifying a distant sound as a singing Grasshopper warbler. http://www.xeno-canto.org/species/Locustella-naevia

Turns out it was ice cream vans engine, nee good asking me im fick.
