Re: Compulsory Microchipping for Dogs

Firstly, I wouldn't want a small breed pup of 6 or 8 weeks done that early.

Secondly, it is like other things they try to make us do - no good unless it's enforceable.

Thirdly, why make it law for us to microchip, yet not make it law for vets, rescues, and council workers who pick up dead dogs in the road to SCAN the flippin' chips we've had done!

I have read of many cases of missing dogs that never get home even when chipped because whoever picks them up hasn't scanned them.
There was a case last year of a heartbroken woman who spent 3 months looking for her dog, only to eventually discover it had been killed within half an hour of running off. The council workers do not have to scan dead dogs and inform owners, so this poor woman had carried on searching for her dog all that time. And she is not the only case.

Re: Compulsory Microchipping for Dogs

Here it is law, dogs must be microchipped. Obviously the system doesn't always work, as Mups says, but more than a few dogs have found their way home because of it. I suppose one big problem is that many people who find a stray dog don't want the bother of taking it to a vet to be scanned and so simply don't bother.

As vets charge you vast amounts for going in the front door this is hardly surprising .

Like many 'compulsory requirements' those who don't give a dam about the law won't bother to have it done and those who are unlikely to need it because their dogs are carefully monitored will and will also foot the bill .

Unless a dog is lost how will anyone know if your dog is chipped or not .

Microchips can also migrate around the body making them difficult to detect. There have also been cases of soft tissue tumors sarcoma or fibrosarcoma on the site of the injection

Also surprisingly a microchip is not proof of ownership if your dog is stolen ..
Another important point that pet owners must be aware of pertains to recovering their stolen microchipped pet. Specifically, if your chipped pet is stolen, the chip does not guarantee that you will find your pet. Also, recent cases in the UK reveal that the chip does not provide proof of ownership. So, even if you locate your stolen, microchipped pet, it is possible that your pet will not be returned to you. In April 2010, Dave Moorhouse was contacted by Anibase, a microchip database company, asking if he wanted to change the ownership records of his Jack Russell Terrier, Rocky. Mr. Moorhouse told Anibase that Rocky had been stolen and asked where he was but Anibase refused to provide information regarding Rocky’s whereabouts.

Steven Wildridge, managing director of Animalcare, the company that owns and operates Anibase, says: “This is not a choice, it’s an obligation under the Data Protection Act. If the individuals involved do not want us to pass on their details to the original owner then we cannot do so unless compelled to following a criminal or civil proceeding.”

Although Rocky’s microchip was registered to Mr. Moorhouse, the police concluded there was no criminal case and refused to help him find Rocky. A Huddersfield County Court judge ruled that the situation was out of his jurisdiction. Mr. Moorhouse asks, “What’s the point of having your pet microchipped if you can’t get him back?”
