Re: Tap washer replacement

Just been down to an excellent plumbers shop in Eastbourne and got two mixer tap inserts for £27

These are the old ones. The shop owner did say the cold water one was very stiff.

I was staggered at the different ones on the market, even about 4/5 different splines, let alone sizes. Virtually impossible to get the right ones without taking hem to a specialist plumbing shop. This shop wde use has all these bits and pieces one could ever want, amazing place.

Have a go at taking the old ones apart, they can be cleaned and new discs fitted.

Re: Tap washer replacement

Might try that and keep them as spares now new ones in and working ok. What a different in smoothness turning them on and off. Didn't realise how bad the old ones got.

That is a keep an out of "er indoors" way job for later on

Re: Tap washer replacement

I could be wrong Realspeed (I often am) but they look like standard quarter turn ceramic cartridges that can be obtained from B&Q......For fifteen quid the pair......

OGF

that they might well do BUT there is about 4/5 number of teeth at the end so you might get the wrong one

the shank between the teeth and nut we saw 2 different lengths one of which would have been to short

The actual sizes in mm also alters in width .
Even the man in the shop produced a couple that looked the same until they differed under close inspection

Look at the options alone in the photos

I didn't realise tap inserts could be so different, it is not until you actually try and find the right one you start head scratching

To give some idea and this is just one picture from from one store of which no doubt he has thousands

I doubt B and Q would have the exact right one let alone the right inserts and washers and seals.

You have less options in buying a new car

With all due respect Realspeed, the one third from the left looks like a standard unit, and the same as your illustration earlier....I do speak from a little bit of experience......I was a centre lathe turner and used to make em'....

Re: Tap washer replacement

no it doesn't the teeth at the top there are a lot more than in mine for a start as well as the length of them.
This is what I mean you have to be so careful to check all aspects .

Mine

one you said was same

Completely different

Most places actually ask for the original so they can match it.

This is why i took mine to the plumbing shop so even the splines would be the correct ones.

with all due respect if you havn't done this job then if you have to be very careful you get the right insert. As I said you might even have to send away original for an exact match

Blimey, when was that? These cry out for autos, and I can go back to using Herbert's, just after the War.

Well perhaps not that sort, but an assortment of valves and glands, but none of that CNC rubbish in our factory, all seat of the pants turning on Turret, Capstan and Centre Lathes, and then do your own milling for the Hexagons.....Probably why the factory packed up and made me redundant....Happy Days though....
