Re: childhood memory

We used to go to the local stream and catch sticklebacks. Used to take them home in a bucket - don't remember what we did with them

Re: childhood memory

Yes we caught newts before they became a protected species

We had a pond in the garden and we let them out there. We also took frogspawn to hatch.

We also worked the other way about, when our carp were getting too big we took them up the common to live in the lake

Yes doc, we used catch Newts and collect frogspawn too.
My brother was always a reptile freak, so also used to catch Slow worms and grass snakes.
We'd also go scrumping apples, play hopscotch, have catapaults, and play knock down ginger.

Re: childhood memory

I kept newts in an old baby bath in a secret clearing in the woods and fed them on ant eggs .

Re: childhood memory

I've just tugged another memory out - my friend and I used to go to the park and collect caterpillars on leaves and take them home in jam jars (with no tops).

Fascinating watching their legs moving and their heads moving up and down eating the leaves

The days when kids were allowed out all day, only expected home for the dinner/tea/supper , where we got into scrapes and came home with cuts and bruises and no one was sued

Re: childhood memory

We had newts in our pond when I was a kid, the Crested type. Still got newts in my pond, but they are the common type not the Crested newt. Had a lot of babies this year too.
