It is frustrating to live in a democracy and yet see your elected representatives acquiesce to international or national policies that have you screaming at the TV/radio/newspaper.

I am sure a politician and his/her team agree not to challenge the UN because of an up-and-coming contract.

Money talks and we listen.

I think that might have more to do with some Aussies who take the high moral ground .. though that ground is like shifting quick sand and they threaten to get buried in it.

Yep, far better to tell fibs and take the "low moral ground".

the persons on manus and nauru are 'illegal immigrants' they want to steal the place of immigrants who apply legally and wait patiently to be accepted - NO they should never be allowed in unless they take the fair route!

I'm not knocking it as a strategy to deal with unwanted immigrants.
My point was ... there can be a noticeable lack of empathy from some Aussies toward citizens in other countries who express reservations over immigrants that their own government do not deal with so ... how shall we say,... effectively. Accusations of xenophobia or been uncaring of their plight can sound so patronising or hypocritical when they're launched from Oz.
