Re: The Polish and Others are leaving.

I'm not sure we need to import minimum wage employees unless you want people like my husband and I on the dole. It's been increasingly hard to find the sort of jobs we normally do for ages, we have plenty of people here can do the jobs if they were available to us.

Re: The Polish and Others are leaving.

A nurse on the radio today said she had worked for the NHS in, I believe, intensive care but at £15 an hour, this was not enough for her to support herself and her child.

She had no alternative but to resign and become an Agency nurse. She works in the same department, doing the same job for £40 an hour.

This is crazy.

Hi

Yes it is crazy, but more and more are doing it.

Theresa May was quite dismissive to a nurse when she complained about years of below inflation pay rises during the election.

We have a shortage of 9.000 nurses and it is getting worse.

Specialist Mental Health Social Workers are doing the same, getting £38 an hour working for agencies.

This is not a good use of Public Money.

And it's all coming out of the NHS budget.

Another reason throwing money at it doesn't work.
It needs a long term strategy of training then employing at a decent wage to retain decent staff.

The claim every year that the budget is increased under such a regime is a cynical ploy to run it into the ground ready for privatisation.
Austerity is being used as a tool with the long term intention of privatising an ailing healthcare system.

It needs targeted investment to save it's fate......and that needs a change of government.

Look at it this way. If things continue in this way, eventually ALL nurses (etc) will be working for agencies at higher rates of pay.

Perhaps the government and the (highly paid) senior management of the NHS will realise that they have to compete, and raise NHS wages to a higher level!

On the other hand, do agency nurses have contributory pension schemes?

Re: The Polish and Others are leaving.

How on earth has it ever come about that we are so dependent on overseas Doctors in the first place? Could it possibly be that although it costs the British taxpayer £230,000 for every junior Doctor to complete his/her training, the moment they pass those exams, they are free to stick two fingers up to the taxpayer and sod off to countries paying much more than the NHS. Why on earth didn’t any government have the balls to say: “The taxpayers paid for your training, in return, you must work for the NHS for a minimum of 5 years before taking up a position overseas”

Surely this is only fair?

Hi

I totally agree Shroppy.

I got my training for free, block release and even got a wage whilst doing it, that was at Polytechnic.

I had to work for 3 years for them, a fair price to pay.

They had a shortage of specialists, so transferred across to Uni after getting a Diploma at Poly.

No fees at all, paid a wage at Uni, just had to work during the time I was not actually in Uni and had to sign up for a two further years.

A winner for all concerned.

I went on to get specialist further qualifications, all paid for and a wage whilst getting them, just had to sign up for longer.

I was happy, the Government were happy, I really cannot see the problem in going back to this system.

Indeed.

The shortage of nurses was due to the reduced places for training in this country.
All to do with EU movement , jobs and integration. Not sure about the doctors though, but I know there where many from India who came around 2005 to Liverpool Hospitals en mass.

I actually think we have a cheek taking the cream , when they are needed far more in their own countries .

Re: The Polish and Others are leaving.

Has anyone completed an audit of the number of medical staff needed to treat immigrants over the last generation or so? Is it hypothetically possible that, had the UK not had so many people coming to these shores then maybe the NHS might not have had to import medics to treat the increased number of ill people created?
