Re: Feed the birds

Some say bread is OK but not too much and others say not to. Bread doesn't have a very high nutritional value for them. I know that wet bread can get stuck in a birds throat or crop when they swallow it in large pieces. We buy seeds and and a winter mix for the birds. We also put out fat balls for them.

Re: Feed the birds

We do the same as Kev - seeds and suet/lard cakes.

Bread has very little nutritional value for birds, and it can get mouldy pretty fast.

Edited cos I missed a word!

Re: Feed the birds

Every day, I put a large quiche dish on the garden and fill it with cat food, bread, seeds and any fruit that is a bit too ripe... that way they can choose to eat what they want. I get crows, magpies, wood pigeons, robins and blackbirds mostly.
I also put fat balls on a small tree and that encourages a lot of tits ( great, blue and long tailed) , chaffinches and wrens.

At night, when all the birds are in bed , I fill the dish again with cat food, bread and a few dog treats...so my family of wild foxes can also eat. The birds empty the bowl by day and the foxes lick it clean at night.

Re: Feed the birds

I feed my birds twice a day, first thing in the morning at 6.30am and you can see them in the bush all waiting for me, then again about 2pm.
I give them:

Chopped up fresh bread.
Fat Balls.
Peanuts.
Sue Pellets.
Mill worms.

And fresh water every day.

If you can also provide some water,m may need to be changed often if it freezes quickly.

I usually do Nom, but at the moment it is freezing so fast that I don't know how many are gaining any advantage.

Luckily, there's still a small area of my pond which doesn't freeze, where the waterfall is, so they get water from there. It's quite funny to see them lining up for a drink.

Re: Feed the birds

Too dangerous to attract birds to our garden here at home, too many die from the resident cats. I have to just hope they get enough from other kind people where they are safer.

I've got a bag of bread to take for the ducks and swans though they seem to enjoy it and so few people seem to go to see them at this time of years, they could drown in food in the summer with the good weather walkers but few wander down the tow path with bread now.
