Re: Gumbud's poems

Is it this year or is it last year?

Was it this year or was it last year
That I signed my final Will
Have the clock hands just stopped turning
And the cuckoo lost its trill

Where did that Zimmer frame come from
I didn’t order that
And where did all those stains come from
That sit upon the mat?

Now I know Sundays’ disappeared
But not sure if I’ve passed last year
Did I replace the toilet roll last night?
‘Cause my sphincters gone all tight!

Well I know if I switch on tellie
It will bring me back to life
They give me all the info even, time and strife!
Is that the time already; I’ve got appointment with me wife!
I visit her as often as me mind kicks into gear
She always seems so patient, never moans or not sincere
So if I can catch the right bus, I can be there minutes flat
Then I sit there with me beer can at the grave side on the grass!

Getting home is still a problem
After finishing ‘six pack’ and a chat
Can’t remember number of the bus
And is it red or is it black!

So sometime I start walking
And it always works real neat
With me white cane waving madly
Cars stop; and rides a treat!

So I’m getting by quite comfortably
In whatever year I’m in
Someone is paying fuel bills
And emptying the bin

So each day is new adventure
With buses red and black
And I’ve never lost the cemetery
Even though it’s moving fast

I’ve lost the other half sometimes
But the others help to pass the time
And eventually she turns up again
Usually on the days with rain!

Re: Gumbud's poems

If Only……………….

If only I had stayed the course
Not ran for visions on the shores
But settling down was hard to take
There was a whole new world to make

And so I stretched the mantle thin
Looked back at settled images grim
No; I never wanted more of that
I now fed on new mown grass

But just because I wasn’t there
Life still went on without a care
For one lost wandering soul like me
They had to heal the gaps you see

They say the memories dim real quick
But some lit eternal lights that fit
They lit them and they burned them bright
For those who had just taken flight

I never thought they wouldn’t last
Thought immortality was in our grasps
But whilst I played the wildest games
Their immortality did drain

And now that mantle that I stretched
Has gaps immortal; won’t give me rest
I try to stitch them up each day
To make the images go away

I’ve run as far as I can run
And now the new fields aren’t such fun
I left the old fields far too soon
Now can’t get home to empty rooms

Once there was a way to get back home
Once there was a way lead homeward bound
But I gave up the home way back
My home I carry on my back

Re: Gumbud's poems

At sixteen the world goes for ever
There is music and romance and things
We can never imagine an ending
To what lies there beyond outer rings

So there’s no need to plan for a ‘future’
Or plan for the loss of a friend
These things don’t exist in our eternal grist
There is no meaning in our sights of the end

It carries on into the 20’s
There is so much to do with our lives
And the 30’s the same, it’s the goddam same game
But some do it with tag along wives!

In the 40’s some of us are slowing
The fat has moved into our guts
But eternity still beckons onwards
We just have to give it more thrust!

In the 50’s we sit on the hill top
And look down on both sides of the coin
We bemoan where we’ve come but still welcome the sun
Eternity is still in our grasp

In the 60’s old age starts to beckon
But we fight it with all of our might
We will work till we bust, with our strong upper crust
But the waist belt is getting too tight

In the 70’s it creeps in upon us
Did we really pack all of that in?
God, I never saw it go past, thought there was ‘everlast’ last!
Did I commit some unforgivable sin?

In the 80’s denial has vanished
There are too many gone on ahead
Our contemporaries wear thin to the sound of a pin
And our celebrations visit the dead!

If you’ve reached 90 on this site
Then identify yourself to us all
We will embrace you with glee and serve Japanese tea
And then have a sit down in our meditation hall

If you’ve reached hundred you can’t reach the keyboards
So just sit back and wait for the end
There will be no fun ‘round here not now or next year
You may as well call it the END!

Re: Gumbud's poems

Confusing Teens [the male version]

Those names come flooding back to mind
Of long lost friends from my teen times
Most not intense just lots of fun
We mixed them ‘round to different drums

Our social circles widely drawn
We wanted laughter not forlorns
Our greatest times were males alone
We joked, we storied; kick up some storms

And then something in skirts appeared
And were not Scots in guilded kilts
They proned to giggles, holding gaze
They drove me and my mates half crazed!

And so hormonal die was cast
The picked us off in single blasts
Yes we did meet from time to time
But dates we had and were not blind

We were confused which way to go
Stay with ya mates or let hormones just flow
Yes another era come and gone
It stayed a while but we’d been conned!

Re: Gumbud's poems

or as John Lennon put it even better "I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me...
She showed me her room, isn't it good, norwegian wood?"

Re: Gumbud's poems

Same Chance Race?

we started out on "same chance race"
or so we really thought
and for the first decade or four
we kept up even scores

but some slowed down to have a fag
some swig a jar or two
some to down weekly french fries
and batter spread like glue

and then we noticed there were less
disappearing two by two
we'd started out in double figures
but now a handful flew

I sometimes wonder as I yearn
for golden years left behind
should we have shared the same blue print?
and read small print not blind?
