Tiler's daily labour rate, and how many days

Hi peeps.

Just had a tiler quote for my bathroom, and my neighbour thinks it is very high. He quotes £180 for tiles, £60 grout, and 4 days labour, working out at £180 per day. Total cost, about £960,

My neighbour, who was also interested in a quote, said 'no no no! It shouldn't take 4 days, and definitely not as much as that!'

Our bathrooms are quite small, and only wall (lengthways above the bath) is fully tiled. The wall opposite is half tiled, and so are sections of other walls.

Has anybody got any recent experience of having a tiler in - London rates - and can advise?

The plumber is recommended by a friend and I've used him for small jobs, and he steered me to the tiler. But I don't know who's more right: a professional, or a neighbour who though means well, thinks she could do it herself! I even joked I should hire her!

Are you providing the tiles ? if so that is extortionate ! Try checkatrade website for a quote or three and compare.

He quoted for tiles (the £180).

I've checked online and the daily rate does seem to be £150-200. It's how many days, that is the problem. A trading site suggested 6-10 sm/day.

I think I'd best get some more quotes, plumber's mate or no plumber's mate.

When we had our bathroom done the tiler couldn't match B&Q or many other outlets for price so usually buy them yourself brings the price of the job done. Two days for floor to ceiling tiling on all 4 walls in our bathroom.

Thanks Julie. My neighbour thinks 2 days max. Plumber said he does showroom finish, but as I intend selling very soon that is not a concern. I just want to pay a fair price.

Reading other forums. Posts say that walls need to be pva'd/skimmed, then left to dry.

Forgot to mention, and may be important, the bathroom is being gutted: having new bathroom suite put in too, hence the plumber. He reckoned on 5 days on that, so wonder if tiler is quoting for 4 days to work around the suite coming out and being replaced, and actual access to the walls? I have read advice that because they can't very well go off on another job they quote a full day to cover their costs.

My little sis has already agreed to let me use her spare room to sleep in if toilet/bathing becomes a problem, but plumber reckons toilet will be done last.

Ours was gutted too, the builder PVAed the walls and did the prep, tiler then came in tiled day one and grouted and finished the next day.

Thanks Julie. Shall definitely get more quotes and do a plea for help (local tradesmen/recommendations) elsewhere.

My son's a tiler and I have just asked him and he said 2 days, 3 at the most depending on what sort of tile and the condition of the walls. But he thought £500 would be plenty for that. But the going price is £150 to £200 per day again dependant on the condition of the walls etc.
