Re: Whose Side Are The Police Really On?

All of this was bound to happen. We are an overcrowded island, too many people, the police can't cope or don't want to cope, plus they busy with all the silly misdemeanours like dropping a fag butt or typing a rude word on the internet.

I left earlier and at 4am, my phone went, ‘Mom, my bag has been stolen and we know where it is but the police won’t do anything!’

The tracker on her phone indicated that it was at a place nearby, which was a half way house for offenders and people with mental issues.

She and her friends went there and banged on the door but no one answered. An off duty policeman who was passing by came to their aid and explained there was nothing he could do. That by them trying to bang the door down, they would be the ones in trouble.

The local police were called and they wouldn’t do anything either. They gave my daughter a crime number and promised to ring the next day. We still await that call.

So l ask, who’s side are the police on? The victim or the perpetrators?
It makes me sick and proves that crime really does pay....
Instead of banging on the door, she should have hung some bacon on it for a swift police response.

How was the bag stolen? Did she leave it unattended somewhere?

They are a disgrace.
I am in no doubt that the courts favour criminals rather than victims. This is borne out by the sort of sentences they hand out these days. I know not why.

I, too, don't hold the police in much regard these days, for the reasons others have given. Perhaps the police are sick and tired of wasting their time charging miscreants only to find that the courts actively encourage their crimes. Why bother?

I am absolutely sure that both the police and the courts have now lost much, if not most of the public's confidence and support.

How this situation will pan out in the not-too-distant future is anybody's guess. Perhaps people will begin to take the law into their own hands. Almost certainly, people will choose not to bother reporting things to the police because they know that nothing will be done. Of course, this will result in crime figures dropping! A win-win for the police and the government!

Did I hear somewhere that there are some crimes that the police will not now attend or act on

Quite a lot, I believe, including such things as burglaries.

I think they might still come out for murders and, of course, the placing of pork products on the steps of mosques.

I can tell you the answer to that. Just think about it for a minute, if you had a job paying about £150K a year with a chauffeur driven bullet proof limo ferrying you from court to court and a guarded government owned house to stay in when away from home (No hotels)

Would you want to loose this wonderful life when all you need to do is hand down pathetic sentances to criminals in society. Weak, inadequate sentancing means that crime will continue at (or near) current levels.

If really serious prison terms were handed out them crime might come down and then the judges and court personnel would be out of a job

Indeed. I have suspected as much myself, but I find it hard to believe that such things should be tolerated. Questions must be asked, but who could prove that was their intention?

I think that the only way to correct this leniency would be for the government to pass laws stipulating minimum sentences for specific crimes.

Alternatively, import some American judges who appear to have their heads screwed on! 200 year terms sound advantageous!

The number of police is reducing, whilst the rate of crime is increasing, so how can we expect the service we used to get?
At last, a sensible reply. I've had few dealings with the police but when I have the service I've received has been very good.

What were the police meant to do at 4am with no evidence that a crime was taking place at that time? Gather in force and knock the door down just one one person's say so? Yes, disappointing not to have heard back from them over a day later but this was a crime to be investigated in the cold light of day.

Police have to prioritise. They deal with burglaries, muggings, assaults, drunk drivers and domestic disputes to name a few. There are not enough to deal with every complaint on the spot.

A friend of mine has a civilian role for which he sometimes needs a police escort. Several times, though, they've been distracted by some incident, often not a crime but just somebody needing help. Last week a teenage girl locked out of her house, another time a confused 90-something found wandering - they are not just crime fighters but impromptu social workers as well!

Yes, there are some lazy and bad apples in the barrel - but by and large a decent and dedicated workforce for whom we should be grateful.
