The Good Old Days ...

I remember the corned beef of my childhood,
And the bread that we cut with a knife,
When the children helped with the housework,
And the men went to work, not the wife.
The cheese never needed a fridge,
And the bread was so crusty and hot,
The children were seldom unhappy,
And the wife was content with her lot.
I remember the milk from the bottle,
With the yummy cream on the top,
Our dinner came hot from the oven,
And not from a freezer; or shop.
The kids were a lot more contented,
They didn't need money for kicks,
Just a game with their friends in the road,
And sometimes the Saturday flicks.
I remember the shop on the corner,
Where biscuits for pennies were sold
Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic?
Or is it...I'm just getting old?
Bathing was done in a wash tub,
With plenty of rich foamy suds
But the ironing seemed never ending
As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.
I remember the slap on my backside,
And the taste of soap if I swore
Anorexia and diets weren't heard of
And we hadn't much choice what we wore.
Do you think that bruised our ego?
Or our initiative was destroyed?
We ate what was put on the table
And I think life was better enjoyed.

I am glad women can now have careers, and men are expected to help out in the home and with the children.

I don't think kids were any happier or contented then.

Thank goodness for modern conveniences, I would hate to go back to the olden days, which were not so good, imo.

Life certainly seemed simpler.

I can remember sitting on the kitchen sink draining board for a wash.

I have never heard that term for a chamber pot before.

We used to call it a potty, but sometimes a gazunder because it goes under the bed.

We used call it a potty too. But we only used them when being toilet trained, we used the loo.

We lived in a two up two down. No bathroom just an outside toilet. There was only a kitchen sink, the cooker was under the stairs. We had a living room and a front room. The front room was kept for visitors and rarely used. We had to have a bath in a tub in front of the coal fire. You are right, the olden days were not good.

Re: The Good Old Days ...

My childhood home, featured in my avatar, was a farmhouse built on the foundations of the home belonging to the Minstrel Blondel. He was given land in the Channel Islands and Normandy when he got Richard the Lionheart out of prison in Austria. My family, on my father's side, are supposed to be the guy's descendants.

Thirteen Germans had taken over the house during WW2.

The house was quite large, when I was a young kid it had a kitchen, breakfast room, lounge, and annex with an extra lounge and kitchen downstairs. Upstairs there were four large bedrooms, bathroom with loo, and an attic which hadn't been emptied for 100 years.

The house went through some modifications when I was a teenager, and the original kitchen was turned into a dining room and a new more convenient kitchen added on. The house was eventually sold in 1984 as it was getting too much for my parents to manage. My three sisters and I had no interest in it, besides which, three of us had moved to the UK when we married English guys.
