Elderly cat

Hi everyone,

I am getting worried about my poor cat amber who is about 16 years old. She has always been a fussy eater, but nowadays hardly eats much but is drinking lot's more water, i fear it could be diabetes, is there anything a vet can do for this?

She is an indoor cat, everyday moggy type, but we love her to bits. Any advice much appreciated.

Re: Elderly cat

If she has diabetes I am sure the vet could do something to help Amber. She may have kidney problems and her mouth could well need some attention as she is 16 years old. I would take her to the vet to see what he says, but in the meantime have you tried feeding her fresh food - fish or cooked chicken is often tempting. If she has been on hard food, she may not be able to manage it very well and a change to soft food may do the trick and I believe there are some very good cat foods in small packs, especially the luxury ones. My daughter had an elderly cat who had similar problems, but she had some extractions and a change of food and coped quite well. If she does have diabetes, she may just need tablets, but if she has to go onto insulin injections hopefully you will manage once you get the technique. The vet/nurses will teach you.

Re: Elderly cat

Hi Stef, the drinking could also be related to a urinary tract infection/kidneys.

I would certainly get her checked by the vet ASAP .

I hope your little one will be better soon .

Re: Elderly cat

Do let us know how she gets on.
One of my cats had to be moved from hard food to soft food recently and I was quite worried about her for a while but she is fine now. They do worry us sometimes don't they? Bless them.

Hello Stef. Yes I would say also to take her to vet. It will put your mind at rest. Let us know how she gets on please. My cat can be fussy too. Eats everything on minute, turns his nose up next.

Re: Elderly cat

I would agree with other members, it is important that Amber is seen by the vet who will check her thoroughly to find the cause of her drinking excessively and not eating.

Please let us know how you get on at the vets and I hope Amber will be better soon.
