Dahlias

Are there any Dahlia enthusiasts here by any chance?

I am ordering three new dahlias from a grower, for next spring, but they are not selling them as tubers, only young plantlets.

What I want to know is, will these immature plants eventually grow tubers late next season or not?

I know bedding dahlias don't, but these are large 3-4 ft ones.

I will ask the growers when I order, but just wondered if anyone here knows please?

Re: Dahlias

Here are just three of the few I have grown

Re: Dahlias

We bought various ones last year only ones came as plantlets didn't produce tubers and were more like a bedding plant.

Re: Dahlias

Before we moved to the cold north, I had over 100 tubers. Can't just grow one ya know!
It was so hard giving them away. (Too short a growing season here.)
Like Rehab, I only bought them as tubers.
I would imagine though, for the size you mentioned, that they have been planted as a tuber.
Enjoy them!

Re: Dahlias

I will perhaps be able to phone the grower tomorrow if they are back at work, and will let you know the answer. I am interested to know, as I have only bought tubers before, too. However, these particular ones are not available as tubers for some reason.

I wondered if it is a way of getting us to buy new plants every year, instead of over-wintering tubers?

I'll post the answer as soon as I know.

Rehab Yours are lovely. There are so very many different variations in dahlias aren't there.

We have a lot more of different varieties overwintering in the greenhouse and about 10 in the ground, they seem to survive ok, I used to dig them up religiously every year after the first frosts. Now I leave them in the ground.

It probably also depends on what kind of winter we have, and perhaps how far north we are too.
I see you are Midlands, same as me.

I like your last one, it's very pretty, the white with slight pinky/mauve tinges.

The main one I was sending for is called 'April Heather', it is not easy to find a supplier of that one, but I want a couple of others too.

The winters seem to be mild enough here for dahlia to survive in the ground. I am terrible with plant names, I have lost the plant labels over the years, my favourites which propagate from each year are the ones overwintering in the greenhouse. G

Re: Dahlias

This is a better one of the one I've been after.

I also like the black leafed ones:
