Anyone had eye surgery for clogged tear duct?

My eye doctor wants to "clip the tear duct" on my right eye, which is constantly dripping, and blurring my vision. Anyone had this done? Are you happy with the end result, or regret doing it? Any complications or side effects?

Re: Anyone had eye surgery for clogged tear duct?

I suffered from a watery eyes and was diagnosed as having a blocked tear duct. The test they gave me to determine this was horrendous - it involved threading a very fine catheter through my tear duct while at the same time a light as bright as the sun was shining in my eye. I just about stood it the first time but then she wanted somebody else's opinion and they started to do it to me again! I wouldn't let them - it was horrible!!

They told me the duct was blocked & I needed an operation. Apparently this operation involved going in through the side of my nose. I couldn't bear the thought of it so I said 'No thanks' and decided to put up with it.

It's not too bad at the moment - I used heat & massage to try & unblock it myself naturally.

Maybe yours is worse than mine was but I'd have to be desperate to have that operation.

Re: Anyone had eye surgery for clogged tear duct?

I had a "Stent" put in behind the eye due to glaucoma. A stent is a small drain tube smaller than a human hair.
First they put drops in to freeze the eye several times, then mask the face and do the operation which you don't feel but does include a small cut.
The worst part was afterwards for about a month, it felt as if grit was in the eye and the amount of effort to resist rubbing it? well it is down to will power. That meant a patch over the eye as well at night.
You ask about side effects? none infact my eyesight significantly improved and now have 12/12 pressure in both which is normal, but I do have to have drops in the other eye

beforehand the eye surgeon stopped me from driving , I had to surrender my licence or risk a £1000 fine, after the operation I waited for about 18 months then took the gov. eye test for driving and passed easily so got my driving licence back

Hope this is what you wanted to know more or less.

Did it scare me the thought of that operation? you bet it did, but either that or going blind, so no option

All I can say is ... too much tear is better than not enough.

Oh at about the same time I had to go into hospital and have a gall bladder removed, I posted about it elsewhere some time ago and the complications that went with it

Basically my right eye starts dripping and blurring my vision every 3 to 4 minutes, which requires a Kleenex to soak up all the tears. By the end of the day my eye is red, sore and puffy from the constant rubbing and blotting. Nothing fatal, but it is extremely irritating. In other words, I can live without this operation, but I'm trying to figure out if I want to (i.e. is the cure worse than the disease?).

This clogged tear duct was caused by antibiotic eye drops (Maxitrol), from another eye doctor. No, exact opposite of dry eyes.

Could you describe more about the "have to have drops in the other eye"? What sort, how often, and is it for always?

Re: Anyone had eye surgery for clogged tear duct?

One drop AM one drop PM and another bed time. All prescribed by the surgeon. No problem in doing it.

it is to keep the eye pressure down, as for type that really depends on eye condition so what is prescribed for me may not be for everyone. That is up to the eye specialist to decide on
