Re: Do toasters commit suicide?

Like you Cate, I had great faith in coffee machines, 'higher mentality' is a good choice of words.
Try talking to the dishwasher, tell it how handsome it is, what a faithful 'ol friend it is - words to that effect. It may perk up at the sound of your voice.
I've told our new coffee machine, what a handsome fellow it is and how great it looks on the worktop and I hope it will be our friend for many years to come!

Janela, I think you have discovered the fountain of youth for all machinery, that is the sound of a voice full of appreciation, the machine will understand that it is not taken for granted and will act accordingly to give years of good service. Now husbands take note.

The last 2 appliances I've bought that were Sunbeam were disastrous. I have bought Sunbeam for nearly 50 years but will no longer buy a Sunbeam product. They are now made in China and are cheap and nasty.

You still have time, rush to the kitchen polish the item and tell it how special it is and how you could never live without it.

But how will you feel when you go in one morning and find it dead?

Re: Do toasters commit suicide?

I suppose it depends how often you use an appliance, I service mine regularly and most have been good.
I don't buy cheap and sometimes buy the dearest, because I find you only get what you pay for.
I learnt this very early in our married life, when we bought a English Electric washing machine, it was one with a power wringer, spinners were not around for awhile, in the end we put it out to someone else who had it for years before they too passed it on.
We then paid £900 for a top of the range AEG that lasted for years too.
Our latest is a Miele all singing and dancing washing machine, another German machine, we have had it 5 years and touch wood it is fine and working well.
Toasters we buy the cheapest, the same as electric kettles, I consider if I can get a 1 to 2 year life out of them it is not too bad value for money.
My Delonghi coffee machine was free form someone who couldn't be bothered with the cleaning you have to do on them,I use mine for breakfast only, and hoping it will last till the end of my life.
I find you can pick up a bargain on Ebay, because folks buy them and just can't be bothered with them after a few weeks.
Enjoy your toast and coffee this morning.

I don't think they understand Cate. All it needs is understanding and a little common sense.
I bet no one but you and I say good morning to their coffee machines
