I traveled a lot in Jordan up and down the Kings highway and through the back ways as we lived out in the desert for a year or two before moving to Amman .
I have never seen the army other than on manuevres or a tings as the royal guards.
Our driver was stopped and I am sure they were very polite but they did have big guns and were not someone you would banter or joke with. The road stops looked like they were run by the army. It may have been that this was at a time of unrest but it was before the Arab Spring.

The funny thing about speeding in Jordan is that there are hardly any cars on the highways so surprised they bothered.

Re: Jordan

appropo - whilst holidaying in certain parts of Thailand say 20 yrs ago we travelled by cheap bus options throughout the night [ cooler too] and we were frequently stopped at army check points and checked in our seats as the army boarded the bus - producing our passports - what did churchill once say - [well if he didn't he should have] "the price of freedom is eternal vigilance"

can you perhaps ever see this happening in England; Switzerland; Austria etc at some future date?? and if not why not??

It will probably be happening in the UK in the not too distant future. Probably instigated by vigilantes who will take a payoff in bags of sugar or hydrogenated vegetable oil to let you go through.

Maybe if the regular police become armed. Something that many countries are. Even the beaches in France were patrolled by visibly armed police in the 1960's. Quite scary for British kids on a school holiday.

Re: Jordan

It's difficult to know where it is allowed in the ME though.

Demonstrations at Gazza can be fatal.
