The degree and severity of the reaction of those offended is a totally separate issue to the essential, basic right to freedom of speech which includes political satirists of all persuasions.

The cartoonist is not the criminal.
Neither Charlie Hebdo nor Steve Bell.
To distinguish them or define one as okay but the other as racist or anti-something results in bias and random censorship.

The whole affair is ludicrous. Plenty of cartoons of the Pope, Archbishop of Canterbury, Jesus and Christianity and who the dickens is bothered by them ? No one.


Going off track somewhat...... but I have been reading about the dreadful genocide of the Armenians during WWI plus all the terrible suffering they all endured from the hands of the Turks. Both Muslim and Christians were slaughtered. Burnt alive, pregnant women had babies cut out, women were beheaded in front of their children, girls crucified, children starved to death.. the list is endless.
Something that seems to have been forgotten about i.e. if we were ever told about it, which I admit to not knowing anything until just recently .

Freedom of speech is paramount in any democracy, and Israel is a democracy, so we are told.
Therefore, I wonder why Netanyahu is now attempting to make it illegal for anyone to film /video the IDF, resulting in harsh punishments for those who might do so.

That seems to be a knee jerk reaction to the hullabaloo after the Gaza massacre of Palestinians.

I don't see how it can be prevented or implemented ... journalists and world media will always be 'on the spot' so to speak whenever clashes occur which make good media headlines.
Quite ironic ... when other world leaders trip out 'transparency' as their vote winner Israel are trying to go the other way.

Christians are the most persecuted religious group of people in the world. 900,000 in the last ten years. They were all defenceless too, as is anyone who is martyred.
