The country that ditched us, now really wants us back.

Quite interesting article about a revitalised Commonwealth.

Many respected economists warn it's laughable to think the Commonwealth could ever replace Britain's access to the EU single market, several countries in Africa are deeply sceptical about the benefits of free trade anyway and the Government's opponents have decried the push as "delusional nonsense".

But for Australia, the mother country's current interest in the Commonwealth could be an advantage.

When it finally leaves the EU, Britain will be keen to ink as many trade deals as quickly as possible to prove itself on the world stage.

The country that ditched us, now really wants us back.

Some officials think it's an opportunity for the Australian Government to negotiate hard and get more of what it wants.

I agree that the behaviour towards old friends when the EU dictatorship came along was disgusting.

Just remember, though, that many of us never wanted to join the EEC/EC/EU, and that we have now been proved right!

I could well understand if Commonwealth countries decided not to have us back, but hope that that will not be the case.

The Commonwealth is dead in the water isn't it? We have very little in common nowadays. Time has moved on.
Besides which, to a great many people it represents the bad old days of the bad Old British Empire.

No, I don't think it is dead. Visits and meetings are held regularly, largely encouraged and supported by the Queen. Although there have been talks of Australia wanting to remove the Queen as titular head of state, I think she still remains popular. Also, although Canada and other members have since removed the Union Flag from the first quarter of their own national flags, Australia and New Zealand are still happy to keep it in place, at least for the moment.

Just remember, too, that unlike a certain other 'club' to which we still (for the moment) belong, the Commonwealth makes no charges for membership!

Course he wants us back we are the cash cow. Without us who else actually pays in ? I think that's also why Scotland won't be allowed to stay in or rejoin, another taking not giving.

I'm hoping we can be friendly with the commonwealth again, we've treated them badly but I'd say it's mostly the political elite many of us down here on the coal face have loved them all along.
