This misunderstanding has annoyed radiographers for years!
'Sonographer' - a radiographer who specialises in ultrasound.
Having said that, it seems that there are some laymen (PC: laywomen?) who have been trained to a limited level to be able to perform certain ultrasound investigations, such as the aorta as in this case.
It was very common, when I was in the job, for female radiographers to be called 'nurses' and male radiographers to be called 'doctors'. Although it may be seen as a compliment (to the males), I always politely pointed out that I am not a doctor, but a radiographer!
