I would love to know your thoughts on this!

First let me say the is not a Brexit thread
Back in June last year, many of us voted in the referendum and many voted against advice from the MP's. I sometimes feel that my vote was a small rebellion against governments who don't understand what their public want, so just do what they think is best.... even though they are our servants!
The French elections are also showing some surprising results, where neither party has experience of running the country and I think that goes against what they were expecting... so my question is:-

Do you think our current democratic voting systems are a good way of choosing a leader for our country, who can achieve what the voters believe they voted for? If not, can you think of any way it could be improved ?

There should be no such thing as a safe seat IMO I've voted since I came of age but first vote I felt mattered was referendum ! All my previous ones made no difference to anything at all. Many people here don't vote due to that fact, they become jaded and despondent and don't engage with politics at all.

I don't know what can be done but something needs to engage the people to make them want to vote and feel just occasionally it actually changes things.

Julie , a safe seat is just because most people in that area vote for the same party and we can't change how people want to vote. Do you think proportional representation would help?

Yes, that would definitely be a good place to start.

Perhaps that is a little TOO dramatic Ploppy, but I do feel that the people are getting stronger and want the parliament to listen to what they want. They can't meet all our needs, but I do feel that Local Mp's could hold polls, on big issues, to establish how their constituents feel... they are too distanced from the people they represent!

I know why it happens twink but should it mean many are denied any input into their government for well over 50 years here I believe. It's become a dynasty handing power from father to son, then to friend of family. We are not able to meet them they don't do surgeries, they don't respond to emails or letters. That can't be right for the people who don't vote for them IMO
