Cup cakes

In this age of sugar addiction , when we are being told how bad it is for us can anyone explain this craze for these lurid coloured sugar laden cup cakes ?

No wonder today's children are bouncing off the walls if they are not already showing signs of obesity.

I make little fairy cakes for my grandchildren when they visit but cup cakes and American style muffins yuk .

Re: Cup cakes

I totally agree with you, Muddy, but just about every bakers shop in town has the cup cakes - changing the lurid toppings to suit the season or current celebration. Children are attracted to them and, sadly, today's parents don't seem to have heard of the word 'No'. As for muffins - to me they should be toasted and served with butter and jam/marmalade - not paper cups of yukky stodge!

Re: Cup cakes

We make both muffins the toasty ones and the chocolate chip or blueberry ones also the cup cakes and fairy cakes grace loves baking. The key is they are a treat, and it is possible to keep kids a good weight and keep their teeth good and still let them have a treat.

The kids that get fat seem to have parents that aren't taking parenting seriously too busy to say no you can't have that.

Re: Cup cakes

It’s fairy cakes in this house as well, or a normal sized scone

There’s a tea room in the next village and their tray bakes are so big, one can seriously be shared between 3. I love the look of their scones but the size of a saucer, I’m never going to eat one

Re: Cup cakes

I wouldn't have a clue about making cups let alone cakes to go in them. Cooking is a complete mystery to me, never done it in my life.

Re: Cup cakes

I used to make butterfly buns with the kids when they were young and cornflake/rice crispy chocolate buns. Never used the food colouring they do on cup cakes these days, whoever told them that blue buttercream looks appetising ?

Re: Cup cakes

I don't like cup cakes, and often wonder if all the artificial colours and masses of sugar are put in them to distract you from the fact that they don't taste that great.

Re: Cup cakes

I'm not a big fan of cakes at all, but some of them look very pretty when decorated and like various other foods, I like to look at them, but I don't want to eat them. I will make cakes (which is always hit and miss), but it's Mr Clumsy or people visiting that eat them. I like looking in cake shops but rarely do I want to eat any.

Re: Cup cakes

On the trips we did to the USA their cakes looked fantastic, unfortunately they had absolutely no taste, like eating cardboard. Not just one place in the USA but several parts of the country we visited

Funny you should say that friend gave me a Twinkie something I've always wondered about they feature in many USA books and films. Well it was awful greasy, oily, syrupy yuk. Tasted of nothing but the grease.
