Re: White poppy ?

I march every Rememberance Day with my Corps colleagues, shiny shoes, beret, medals, hip flask etc, every year an elderly lady interrupts the laying of the wreaths by attempting to lay a wreath of white poppies. This is met with silence from the assembled military, veterans and associations. The crowd on the other hand tend to boo her and shout, she is always gently escorted from the area with her wreath.
She is harmless but she is allowed to lay her wreath after we have marched off. There is always someone trying to use this moment of respect for those lost in all our wars to make a political gesture.

I believe they even provide a helpful information pack for service personnel who wish to desert.

There you go white poppy people, it’s your money, but I guess you already knew all of that.
I'm not at all surprised. Yes, a trendy lefty political organisation.

How suitable that the colour of their 'poppies' matches that of the 'snowflakes' who tend to be the ones who buy them.

I didn't know that. Disgusting woman.

But what was your corps? WRAC?

Whenever I see someone wearing a white poppy, I know exactly what I think about them.
But it's not a new thing. Something I learned on this thread is that it's been going on since the '30s. Not millennials at all. It's been attributed to the Dean of Canterbury in 1934 and carried out by the Women's co-op guild. The PPU used to provide for the victims of war. Not sure of its purpose now as there are so many anti war organisations but they certainly seem to have people talking.

However.... it's not really relevant to Remembrance day. Or is it? I can't see how.

Re: White poppy ?

Our Memorial Day is in May, and I always wear a red poppy, which is a fading tradition. While I understand the message behind the white poppies, I am disinterested as this day has a sole purpose that should be respected. International Peace Day should be and is similarly set aside in September.

"Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red" is still one of the most beautiful, haunting, reverent, and moving images I have ever seen. Some things the British do are unsurpassed in elegance, and this was one.

Re: White poppy ?

I would just like to say how pleased I am with this thread. It is so good to see that most people feel we still have a debt of gratitude, to the people who gave their lives so this country would remain free.... and they display their respect by wearing a red poppy.

Well said Surfermom .we went up to London to see this it was both moving and wonderful. One of the war horse puppets was also standing in the amongst the poppies .

That would be frowned on by most who wear a white poppy rehab, it's not done to take away from comemorating the dead of the wars at all. I can only think she feels she is respecting the men and women too in some way, actually wishing for peace IMO is a thing many that died would have been doing all these years.

Julie, nobody wants wars and we would all welcome total peace but the majority of people would not wish to be controlled by selfish people, who want to make people live as they require them to.
We don't live in a fairy tale world where the bad guys are always the ones who lose, and the good people control the world. We all think that we know the best way to do things, but none of us are prepared to compromise, or find mutually satisfactory ways to deal with opposing ideas...... and that is why wars will always exist.
I love this John Lennon song and wish it could happen, but human greed and their desire to control will always prevent it!
