Because of the disturbed ground poppies grew profusely on the battle fields.

Exactly - blood is kind of the point! The poppies are to commemorate all those who lost their lives, were injured or traumatised by war. A white poppy kind of misses the point. Red poppies aren't to celebrate war, but to remind us of its horrors!
