Re: Grenfell Tower: Summed up by Jonathan Pie

Poverty is relative .
Many of the people living in the flats were from other countries where living in this tower blaock would be considered good fortune not poverty ..
Many come from countries where life is cheap and hard -that is why they come to the UK for a better life .if you live in an overcrowded hovel in the Phillipines or a shack in Bangladesh an apartment and the chance of employment in London UK people are still treated as people despite everything is a great option that is why people come here . TO escape poverty as they know it and bad treatment from repressive governments .
Going to the town hall and kicking the doors down would simply not be tolerated in many of the countries of origin of some of the protestors .
The police would just come out and at best beat you up at worst shoot you without turning a hair .
The government do not rush in to support people in a discaster in these cases international aid is usually the first on the scene .
This is the one of the worst disasters for the Uk within living history .
People just don't really know what to do .
The injured are in hospital those who are missing are dead no amount of shouting and cursing Teresa May will bring them back .
They have been incinerated beyond recognition how do they expect anyone to identify them in less than a week ?
No one has died from exposure or starvation or lack of water all has been provided for from charities and good people .
And that is a quintessential part of being in the Uk someone will help you .
You won't be left to die in the gutter although if you are old you may end up dying in a corridor because our health services are overwhelmed by the amount of people they have to care for.
When I see these political agitators screaming abuse it makes me feel ill.
Most have not lost friends family they are just making this a political issue .
These were poor people in these apartments but I bet that when they were alotted them they considered themselves very lucky indeed . An apartment in central London is something to be desired not sniffed at as pretiffying poverty Most people in London live in apartments that they pay through the nose for and aren't pretty .
They have no choice and they can't pick and chose where they live for community reasons either . They live where they can afford .

Hi

It is completely wrong that the fire is being used for Political purposes.

Both Political Parties are to blame.

Council Housing is not better under Labour, let us get that perfectly clear.

Over 2 million Council Houses were unfit for human habitation when Labour was in power.

The last Labour Government had an appalling record for building social housing, Labour Councils do maintain their council housing better than Conservative Councils, far from it.

It is a national, cross party issue.

If anything we need a completely new approach, something along the lines of the way John Lewis is run where the workers own part of the company. This combines capitalism with socialism - a solid compromise.

Can't agree with all you say here; but I had to rescue a fairly large furniture factory many years ago and I used what I called a 'gather round' approach.
I took over the management of a factory which was in deep financial doo doo. After 3 days assessing the situation and to cut a long story short, I went onto the shop floor "OK guys gather round, It's like this; we have the wages this week; next week we have the wages but the week after we don't have the wages.
"You can do anything you like today; you can sit around and drink coffee; play cards etc but you can't go home early.
Tomorrow morning we're going to have another meeting like this and I want you guys to tell me how to fix the situation", please note they knew the factory and I was the new boy.
The next morning we met and they came up with loads of ideas. But they also said they would start at 5 and finish at 7!! They meant 0500 to 1900 with 30 mins for lunch for 3 months. I agreed and installed Coffee and Tea machines on every floor. They also suggested moving some of the operations around which I also agreed to. Luckily there was a great Cake Shop over the road. Later I also installed a profit sharing scheme.
It was like magic; but all the ideas were theirs; they were going to make it work. I would also work 'on the bench' with them which made them laugh at first but that soon stopped.
In 2 months the company was back on its feet.
It's called working WITH people; they didn't work FOR me.
We can't do these things now days, too many rules.

Did you see the interview with Mr Kahn the Mayor, not biased; not political?? ( I hope I spelt his name correctly)

Poor Gordon Brown couldn't do anything about social housing; he had no money. He'd bankrupted the country and sold our Gold Reserves at the bottom of the market, what a shame for him.

Hi

Labour sold off 350 tons of Gold.

This was gold bars we physically had in our bank vaults.

It belonged to us, UK Citizens, bought and paid for.

At that time, it was worth $275 an ounce.

In today's prices, that is $405 an ounce.

The current Gold Price is $1250 an ounce.

That means that we, me and you, have lost as a nation, $845 an ounce in real money each.

That means that we, the UK are £82, 143 millions worse off.

Labour economics for you.
