Re: Feed the birds

I often change their water when it freezes, but this morning I saw a Magpie eating the fluffy snow, I suppose that gives them water.

Re: Feed the birds

Leaving a light ball, like a ping pong ball, floating in the water is supposed to stop it completely freezing over. Because they're light they're supposed to move in the breeze and stop parts freezing. Never tried it so don't know if it works.

Re: Feed the birds

I had a woody on the water table trying to break the ice with his beak this morning. I had to go out and melt it for him.

Re: Feed the birds

I buy packs of Atora suet for the birds, it is easy to sprinkle around. My odd looking blackbird with a damaged wing likes warm porridge

When I let the rabbits out to run in the garden and there's a bit of snow lying around they like to eat it. Even thought they have plenty of water inside. Perhaps they like the taste.

Not a good idea, Sarah. What kinds of birds are they? Do you know?

Hasn't really snowed here since 1976!

Same here Twink, they have to be quick to drink before it freezes again & I gave up, it's just too darn hard to keep it liquid.

I hang fat balls from the pergola well out of the way of damned cats and seeds and mealworms on the garage roof.

Re: Feed the birds

'My' wild birds have a mixture of seeds and chopped nuts, with a little dried fruit in, then some days I soak mealworms and dried instects for them too. They also enjoy bit sof suet.

I was chuffed today because on a new feeder I bought, my little Robin was feeding his face, then another Robin came and joined him. That is the first time I have seen them both together sharing their food.

People say how territorial Robins are, so maybe this is Mr. & Mrs. Robin?

Judd, I am lucky, I don't get cats after the birds because of my dogs.
