Today there was a kite and 2 blackbirds making a right old racket at each other.

Funny thing is though, I can't quite make out who is the villain because the big boy seems to fly after them and try and peck them, then they fly and chase him.

What would be going on, any ideas? Would the kite be trying to take their eggs?
All birds of prey will be mobbed particularly at times of breeding and fledging youngsters, but also migration when following the flocks moving south.

Large flocks of small birds can get involved and mostly just trying to move the bird elsewhere but occasional like your blackbirds protecting their offspring.

Often the first sign of a predator is the change in birds calls to alarm calls.

The Bops are rarely harmed but will snap at any getting too close.

I do see young birds of prey practicing their hunting pattens, not really trying to catch anything but as the year draws on they get more intent on a meal.

An egg is a good meal for many woodpeckers, squirrels, rfats etc.

Re: Birds

Thanks for that Nom.

It seems to have quietened down a bit since I posted the question, but that week they were zooming about everyday fighting and arguing. I haven't heard them the last few days though.

Do the kites stay here over winter?

Re: Birds

Yes they are resident but may move about in winter to more favourable habitat, we do get some from the continent.

Last minute decision to go there. Interesting place but took about 1.5 hrs to get there due to road works.

Took a lot of photos but the sun was right overhead so aerial shots hard to get
I really wanted to get videos standing up but we were told not to so missed a lot of really good chances
