How quickly do you notice when you get a cold?

On Friday night I felt fit as a fiddle as I did on Saturday morning, till 6 am when I started with a constant stream of water down my nose.
My ,mucus membranes were destroyed, when I had Chemo, and this means I have occasional discomforts... so I assumed that is what it was.
By 2 pm it hadn't stopped and I had used a full box of tissues . I wondered where all this water was coming from so I rang the NHS helpline to see if they could advise a way to stop it. They said that, following my medical history, they could offer an out of hours appointment to see a doctor or I could speak to my local pharmacist. I didn't think it was serious enough to see a doctor, but the pharmacist suggested anti histamines.... which I had a supply of from my last nasal problem, so I took one and hoped it would reduce before bedtime.
By 5 pm the nose streaming had reduced, but I had a headache, ached all over and had a temperature that I didn't have before. By now I had worked out that I was getting a cold with all the symptoms.
What astounded me is how quickly I went from feeling really well to really ill, because I am sure that, in the past, it has taken a few days for all the cold symptoms to develop.

Yes, darlin' - but you have to factor in that since having chemo-therapy, you no longer have any resistance to viral infections, so it is entirely possible to 'catch' a cold and having that raging through your system all within hours.

That sure seems quick Twinks. How do you feel now?

May I ask something? When chemo is finished and destroyed everything in it's path, do you ever regain good bugs and immunity again?
Is there anything you can take, like vits & minerals, probiotics and such to help, or would the remains of the chemo destroy those as well?

I guess what I mean is, will you have no immunity forever?

Got a bit of a temperature, but it is just a cold so I will get over it.

Chemo does prevent your immune system from working, but it isn't permanent and most people's are restored in a matter of months. The most dangerous time is over the time they are putting the poisons into your body but the medical people make sure you have back up if you get an infection...one time when they insist that you take anti-biotics.

I understand that your mucus membranes react very similar to your tumour, when you have Chemo, but they are not usually completely destroyed. They normally give you 4-6 sessions of Chemo, for my kind of cancer, but I had to call a halt to it after 3 and both myself and my oncologist now believe that I did not need the standard dose. When I insisted that they stop at 3 they had done no tests to establish if the tumour was still alive, but the surgeon that removed the remains advised me that it was dead as a dodo.
I don't think any vitamins or minerals can help any more than a good healthy diet because Chemo is a mild dose of poisoning. There may be somethings that reduce the effect of the poison, but they don't want you to have them because the poison is what kills the cancer.
They believe that all the bad effects of Chemo are over inside 18 months, and apart from my nasal problem, that seem to be the case with me.

Sounds like a bad case of Man-Flu to me - have you been consorting with the likes of TPin?

Seriously though - hope you get well soon.

Do I sound like somebody who would consort with the likes of Tpin? If he had Man-Flu I would have the pillow over his head before I could catch it.

Thanks for the get well wishes, but I am a woman and can cope with these things

Re: How quickly do you notice when you get a cold?

Hi Folks, my cold is much worse than expected, and I have discovered why...... my insulin isn't working I have been using almost double the insulin that I normally use, but my BS levels still keep rising, so I am going to see a doctor.
I really feel quite ill and that isn't helped by the fact that I can't sleep for more than 2 continuous hours, because I have to keep going for a pee......18 times in the last 24 hours.
I hope they don't send me into hospital, but they may because they need to understand why this is happening ....so do regular tests.
I will let you all know when I do.

Re: How quickly do you notice when you get a cold?

Thank you, I am sure I will get to see a doctor today, but unless they are a diabetes specialist, most have no idea how to deal with problems like this.
I had a similar problem about a year ago where the insulin manufacturers will only check the medicine if they have lots of complaints from the same batch of insulin. I saw an insulin specialist, who was as much use as a chocolate fireguard... so in the end I just had to throw away and vials of insulin that weren't doing the job.
I check my blood sugars 4-6 times a day and carefully measure my carbohydrate intake, so it isn't anything I am doing wrong. I know how to adjust my insulin dose as I have been doing it for more that 30 years.... so I can only assume it is the insulin that is faulty or, because I have a nasty infection, the insulin is unable to work properly.
My sister is coming over for a few days , to look after my cats till I get things sorted.
