Poncy Kitchens

A relative of my wife has just had their kitchen refurbished. Looks lovely - granite floor and worktop etc. Trouble is, they never cook in it, nor they did in the last. Just shove prepared food in the microwave or oven, or get takeaways. What is the point of spending thousands on a room which should inspire, that never properly gets used?

How difficult is it to make a loaf of bread (even from ready mixed ingredients - just add water and wait etc), or to butcher a chicken, or a lasagne, or jacket potatoes ffs, or a simple stir fry? Just what is the point???

Re: Poncy Kitchens

My kitchen is tiny, typical of a 1930s house but My husband has designed it to give me the maximum amount of workable space and I use every inch.
I would love a big kitchen with a double oven, tons of work space maybe even an island and I see people who have this and then don't use it and it makes me so sad.
I don't understand it we all need food, food is essential to a good healthy life if you have a big kitchen why not use it

I agree Cass! Some have a poncy kitchen to show off but, to a good cook, more space is an asset that makes cooking easier.
I have a large kitchen, but I rarely have takeaways.

Re: Poncy Kitchens

Hi

I have a large kitchen, came with the house, but it is designed for show, not cooking.

I use it all though, I love cooking.

Re: Poncy Kitchens

Big kitchens have their drawbacks. More space, more clutter and if you wore shoes with wet black paint on the soles, the distances travelled would indicate inefficient use of energy and miles walked.

Property programmes on TV frequently show couples threatening to rip out a perfectly nice and operationally good kitchen, coz it ain't showy enough.

I completely agree, Dex.

Not always so, Dobra, I designed my own kitchen and it has a perfect 'work triangle' so it is 'energy efficient' . I love to cook, I love my kitchen and heaven help anyone who clutters in there!

Re: Poncy Kitchens

I'm not a fan of poncy kitchens or poncy bathrooms for that matter. I like the idea of a kitchen large enough to take a dining table but if I'm honest, I doubt we would ever use it.

Re: Poncy Kitchens

My kitchen must be about 20 yrs old if not older , I've lived here 14 yrs . It's a typical pine one with plenty of cupboards , the knobs are loose but apart from that very usable . I like it , but my daughter continues to tell me I should have a new kitchen , WHY . I love cooking and have friends round often , we can sit at a round pine table (bought for 20 quid second hand ) and proper food is eaten . Why would I spend my bit of savings on a kitchen when I have one .

Neighbour has a gorgeous sparkly new kitchen cost thousands , it's gorgeous , I like it but I'm happy with my homely one .

Re: Poncy Kitchens

Our kitchen in our last house (which I fitted myself) was simple but nice. By the time we moved, it had been in for around fifteen years but the Estate Agent thought it was brand new and advertised it as such. Because it was simple, it never went out of fashion.
